Experience
Preface: The majority of my tutoring experience has been focused on math, which explains my current free response talking mostly about math. However, I am reviewing previous coursework in physics and chemistry and am available to tutor those subjects at the high school and college levels. I have loved math since I was a child. I aced my math courses throughout school and was eventually selected to attend the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics, a two-year residential program for gifted students in Oklahoma. There, I was able to complete Calculus I-III and Differential Equations before I graduated from high school! After that, I attended The University of Tulsa, where I earned my B.S. in Mathematics in May 2016. Since February 2017, I have been teaching courses at MTGK Institute, where I get to work with gifted and talented students throughout Dallas. Throughout my time in college, I have tutored students on the side and worked for three years at Mathnasium of Broken Arrow. It was at Mathnasium where I really began to understand how to explain math to students of all ages - we worked with students in grades 2-12 on anything from basic counting to calculus. Helping students learn math has been my favorite job in the world, and I hope to continue doing it for a long time. Many students learn math through memorizing formulas and completing too much busy work, a process I affectionately refer to as "plug and chug." This is the only way that many students learn math, and it makes sense that they don't like it. They don't learn how a formula or theorem was discovered, they don't get to see how these ideas are interconnected, and they don't get to fully understand the concept at hand. My focus when I work with students is to help them understand the concepts at hand. I want them to actually learn how to think and solve problems. I help them think about how to read problems and ask the right questions. I'm not a fan of learning "tips and tricks" to get through a course, because it robs students from learning how to think and approach new problems. If you would like to schedule a free consultation meeting with me, feel free to send me a message. I'm happy to help you however I can. While I have experience with students of all ages, I prefer working with high school and college-level students. I am also open to working with determined middle school students.
