Education

I have my BFA from SMU and my MFA from University of California at San Diego. I lived four years in Los Angeles as an actor. I can tell you some tragically hilarious stories if you're interested. But I always wrote: first extremely sappy poetry in my high school literary magazine, which luckily transformed into some fairly interesting fiction in college. In California, I wrote and produced my first play and enjoyed membership in the Actor's Studio Playwright Division in Hollywood. When I moved back to Dallas, I taught 5th grade for two years at St. Thomas Aquinas, and then headed up the new Honors English program for the middle school. After having my son, I began a freelance writing career, which led to published work in Dallas Morning News, the Dallas Advocate, and various other publications/websites. All the while, I have been working on and off on my labor of love that pays me nothing whatsoever, monetarily speaking, a novel that will be published quite soon, I'm absolutely sure of it (think positive, right?). I am the recipient of the Wall Street Journal prize for Literary Excellence at the Mayborn Writing Conference. I was also chosen, based on the first three chapters of my novel, to attend the Sirenland Writer's Conference in Positano, Italy, 2012. I am happy to provide writing samples.

Experience

After teaching full-time for three years, I decided to tutor writing while my kids grew up. Over the last decade, I have tutored students from second grade through high school on a variety of topics within the umbrella of writing. I love it. To me, it is a crying shame that spontaneity and fun has been so squeezed out of the writing process for many kids in schools both public and private, whittled down to a necessary pain on the way to securing an 'A' in a class or entry into whatever institution. Writing, in my experience, is so much bigger. It is finding, trusting, and expressing who you are. It is creative and fulfilling and frustrating and crazy-making. Writing is finding your voice--that one of you that has never been before or ever will be again--and learning to deliver it to the page with words as your medium. This catapults you and your reader on whatever journey you deem worthy. There is not 'school writing' and 'fun writing'. There is only writing. Which is infinitely more fun when you dig deep and get brave and bring yourself to the page. For more information, visit my LinkedIn profile at: http://www.linkedin.com/in/erinryanburdette
