Experience

Background: As a postdoctoral researcher in the Neuroscience field, I have had the opportunity to teach and supervise summer students who are interested in a career in science. These students are typically either in high school or earning an undergraduate degree. I emphasize the importance of designing very detailed experiments to test a specific hypothesis, and I then teach them how to follow through with those experiments to get conclusive results. By stimulating critical thinking and encouraging discussion, I provide them with the tools to one day perform their own unique experiments. I also teach them common techniques and skills that may be used in a laboratory setting. In addition, I do have experience working with children of different ages, ranging from toddlers to high school students. Mainly, in the past I have tutored high school students in biology and algebra. Formerly, I was a gymnastics coach during the summers of high school and college. Teaching gymnastics is very similar to teaching a school subject in that communication is key to any sort of improvement. The manner in which you help a child learn new things, whether it is a gymnastic skill or a math problem, is the same. You must keep the student interested in the subject and make it fun! Patience and understanding are crucial when teaching. Due to my past experience, I know that I enjoy tutoring students of any age. Why I want to tutor: I would love to be a tutor because I am interested in utilizing my PhD to become a professor, and tutoring is an invaluable resource for gaining more teaching experience. I believe that expanding my teaching skills in any way would make me better qualified to ultimately reach my goal of teaching at the college level. Knowledge is a treasure that must be shared, and it can enrich the lives of those who wish to learn. Additional information: I have utilized my PhD in Neuroscience to published 12 scientific, peer-reviewed publications (four in which I am the first author). Therefore, my strong background in Biology, Psychology, and Neuroscience makes me gravitate towards teaching science, but I also enjoy English, Writing, and Math.
